The short version
- Mint closed on 23 March 2024, and Intuit pointed users to Credit Karma, which is not a full budgeting app.
- Replacements fall into three groups: hands-on budgeting methods, automatic trackers, and free dashboards.
- Pick by how you want to budget first, then by country support and bank connections, then by price.

For years Mint was the default free budgeting app, especially in the US. Intuit, which bought Mint in 2009, announced it would shut down and moved users towards Credit Karma. The final shutdown came on 23 March 2024. If you are still looking for a replacement, or the one you picked is not working, here is how to choose.
First decide how you want to budget
Budgeting apps differ less in features than in philosophy. Most people who give up on an app picked the wrong style, not the wrong brand.
| Style | How it works | Suits you if | Apps in the directory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hands-on method | You plan every dollar before you spend it | You want to change habits, not just watch them | YNAB, Goodbudget |
| Automatic tracker | Connects to your accounts, sorts spending, shows budgets and net worth | You liked Mint's "set it and look at it" style | Monarch Money, Copilot Money, Quicken Simplifi, Lunch Money |
| Subscriptions and bills | Finds recurring charges and helps you cut them | You mainly want to stop paying for things you forgot | Rocket Money |
| Free dashboard | Tracks net worth and investments for free | You care more about the big picture than monthly budgets | Empower Personal Dashboard |
The closest replacements for Mint
Monarch Money covers budgets, cash flow, net worth and investments in one place and lets you share access with a partner at no extra cost. It works in the US and Canada and is paid after a free trial.
Copilot Money is a polished tracker for iPhone, iPad and Mac, with categories that learn from your corrections. It is US-only and aimed at Apple users.
Quicken Simplifi, from Quicken, builds a spending plan that updates itself, with bill tracking and savings goals. It is available in the US and Canada.
Empower Personal Dashboard is free and strongest on net worth, investments and retirement planning. Empower also sells paid wealth management, so expect offers for that.
If you want to change your habits
YNAB (You Need A Budget) is built on zero-based budgeting: you give every dollar a job before you spend it. It takes more effort than Mint, which is the point. Bank connections are available in selected countries.
Goodbudget uses digital envelopes that you update by hand, with no bank connection needed. That makes it work in any country and suits households that budget together.
Outside the US
Many Mint alternatives connect only to US and Canadian banks. In the UK, apps built on open banking, such as Emma and Snoop, connect to local accounts. For several currencies, Lunch Money and Spendee are designed for multi-currency budgets. Always check that the app connects to your bank before you pay.
How to switch without losing a year of data
- Export what you can from your current app as CSV.
- Run the new app's free trial with live bank connections for a full month, so you see one complete cycle of bills.
- Import your history only after you have checked the categories match, or you will spend hours fixing them.
- Cancel the old app's subscription before the renewal date.
